Surrounded by misty mountains and lush tea plantations, Kandy is the cultural capital of Sri Lanka. As the last royal capital of the island, it holds a special place in the hearts of Sri Lankans and offers visitors a deep dive into the country's rich heritage.
The Sacred Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa)
The crown jewel of Kandy is undoubtedly the Temple of the Tooth. This golden-roofed temple houses Sri Lanka's most important Buddhist relic – a tooth of the Buddha. Visit during the daily puja (offerings) ceremonies to experience the temple at its most atmospheric, filled with the sounds of traditional drumming and the scent of lotus flowers.
Kandy Lake and City Center
Created in 1807 by the last Sinhalese king, Kandy Lake dominates the city center. A leisurely stroll around the lake takes about an hour and offers beautiful views of the temple and surrounding hills. The city center itself is a bustling mix of colonial-era buildings, busy markets, and modern shops.
Peradeniya Royal Botanical Gardens
Located just outside the city, these magnificent gardens were once reserved exclusively for Kandyan royalty. Today, they span 147 acres and feature over 4,000 species of plants, including a renowned collection of orchids, a towering avenue of royal palms, and a giant Javan fig tree.
Cultural Shows
No visit to Kandy is complete without witnessing a traditional Kandyan dance performance. These energetic shows feature spectacular costumes, acrobatic dancing, rhythmic drumming, and culminate in a thrilling fire-walking display.
Traveler Tips
