Relax on golden sands, catch world-class waves, and witness majestic blue whales in this coastal paradise.

Mirissa beach and palm trees Sri Lanka south coast travel guide by The SL Planner

Mirissa is the quintessential tropical paradise. With its crescent-shaped beach, swaying palm trees, and vibrant surf culture, it has transformed from a sleepy fishing village into one of Sri Lanka's most popular coastal destinations.

Whale Watching

Mirissa is globally recognized as one of the best places to spot Blue Whales, the largest animals on earth. The season runs from November to April. Tours leave early in the morning, and while sightings are never guaranteed, the success rate here is incredibly high. You might also spot sperm whales, dolphins, and sea turtles.

Surfing for All Levels

Whether you're a beginner looking to catch your first wave or an experienced surfer seeking a reef break, Mirissa and its neighboring beaches (like Weligama and Midigama) offer excellent conditions. Weligama, just a short tuk-tuk ride away, is famous for its gentle, sandy-bottomed bay perfect for learning.

Coconut Tree Hill

This iconic, dome-shaped hill covered in tall palm trees jutting out into the ocean is Mirissa's most photographed spot. It's a short walk from the main beach and offers stunning views, especially at sunset.

Secret Beach

Not so secret anymore, but still beautiful, this small, secluded cove is separated from the main beach by a rocky headland. It's a great spot for snorkeling and escaping the crowds of the main strip.

Mirissa Travel Tips

  • Nightlife: Mirissa has a lively nightlife scene with beach bars hosting parties, especially on weekends.
  • Seafood: Don't miss the fresh seafood BBQs set up on the beach every evening. Pick your fish and have it grilled to order.
  • Ethical Whale Watching: Choose operators that follow international whale watching guidelines to ensure the animals are not harassed.
