Visiting Sri Lanka for the first time is an exciting adventure. To help you navigate the island smoothly, we've compiled the most essential travel tips covering everything from visas to local etiquette.

1. Visas and Entry Requirements

Most nationalities require an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) to enter Sri Lanka. It's a simple online process that should be completed before you travel. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months from your date of entry.

2. Currency and Payments

The local currency is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR). While hotels and large restaurants accept credit cards, cash is king in Sri Lanka. You'll need cash for tuk-tuks, small cafes, markets, and tips. ATMs are widely available in towns and cities.

3. Getting Around

Trains: Scenic and cheap, but often delayed and crowded. Book reserved seats well in advance for popular routes like Kandy to Ella.
Tuk-tuks: Perfect for short distances. Always agree on a price before getting in, or use ride-hailing apps like PickMe or Uber in major cities.
Private Drivers: The most comfortable and efficient way to see the country, especially if you have limited time.

4. Cultural Etiquette

Sri Lanka is a deeply religious country. When visiting temples, shoulders and knees must be covered, and shoes and hats must be removed. Never pose for a photo with your back to a Buddha statue, as this is considered highly disrespectful.

5. Food and Water

Tap water is not safe to drink; always stick to bottled or filtered water. Sri Lankan food is delicious but can be very spicy. Don't be afraid to ask for "less spicy" (though it might still pack a punch!). Eat where the locals eat for the best and safest food.

Packing Essentials

  • Light, breathable cotton or linen clothing
  • A light sweater or jacket for the Hill Country
  • Modest clothing for temple visits (sarongs are great)
  • Strong mosquito repellent and high SPF sunscreen
  • Universal power adapter (Sri Lanka uses types D, M, and G)
